Fall 2017

STUDENT REPORTS

The first semester of The Penn & Slavery Project's research was dedicated to researching the connections between the university and the institution of slavery through Ownership. The research was conducted at the University of Pennsylvania Archives, the Library Company of Philadelphia, and Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Students also researched tax records from the Pennsylvania Tax & Exoneration Records, hosted by the Ancestry Library. With these resources, students found records suggesting that several 18th-Century trustees and faculty members benefitted from the slave trade through the sale and ownership of slaves.
